The Weather Channel (TWC) is a free application that offers current, hourly, 36 hour, and 10 day weather updates. The hourly forecast gives the time, sun vs. cloud cover, temperature, precipitation, and wind speed and direction. The 36 hour forecast gives degree of sunshine, high and low temperature, and wind speed and direction. The 10 day forecast provides the date, sun vs. cloud cover, high and low temperature, and precipitation percentage. I am using the Weather Channel to plan activities for the week. For example, which day will I be able to do yard work, take the dogs for a walk, and take off the snow tires (Hooray!).

Evernote is a free application that allows you to create text, photos, and audio notes, autosynchronize notes to a MAC, PC and the Web, make text within snapshots searchable, and mark notes as "Favorites" for quick access. Also, all notes include geo-location information for mapping and search. Evernote can be used for research and class notes, to capture blog ideas and design inspiration, to stay in-sync with desktop notes, web clips, and files to record voice memos. I will use Evernote to keep a text record of ideas and tasks and a voice record of my "to do list." Instead of misplacing or washing the note I wrote to myself I will be able to check Evernote any time of day.

Petfinder is a free application that allows you to search for dogs, cats, and other animals that need to be adopted in your area. This application also features "Happy Tails" - personal stories of successful pet adoptions through Petfinder. I have already used this application to find a rescue that accepted a dog rather than have it put down. The first Friday we met for Marian's EDT 676 class, I downloaded Petfinder. As I looked through the site I noticed a Chinese Crested dog named Odie up for adoption. Since the outlook is not favorable for older dogs at a Humane Society, I contacted Limberlost Rehoming Animal Cause, which contacted a Chinese Crested Dog Rescue, which contacted the Bay Area Humane Society. Another life saved! I will continue to check Petfinder to make sure other small breed dogs are rescued.

myHomework is a free application that allows a student to keep track of homework, classes, projects, and tests. It will notify you when you have late and upcoming assignments by numbering them on your application icon. Late assignments will be marked in red, next day upcoming assignments will be marked in orange, and all other upcoming assignments will be marked in blue. In the 2.0 version you can see your homework entries by using a day or calendar view. You can also transfer homework or class entries to friends and email homework reminders. Many of my students own iPod or iTouch technology and would be motivated to use myHomework instead of writing down assignments and due dates. The writing process is so mundane for today's students that they avoid keeping track of assignments and due dates. Technology provides the avenue for which these students can become responsible and in turn become successful. Students will use myHomework to keep track of homework, projects, tests, and due dates.

Memorize Words for Spanish Lite is a free application that helps you learn the meaning and pronunciation of words. Each day you review words and learn new words selected automatically based on word use frequency. You can also select individual words or categories of words to your daily lessons. The level of words can be adjusted. In between reviews, several games are provided for additional practice on your least proficient words and are intended to add fun to the process. This application is a systematic approach to vocabulary building with daily use. Also, every Spanish word has a pronunciation recorded by a native Spanish speaker. The website for additional information is http://www.memorizewords.com. I teach in a diverse school where Spanish is second to English as a spoken language. I have native speakers in my class but I also have English speakers who are taking Spanish. A definite weakness of non-Spanish speaking students is their unwillingness to learn the vocabulary of a class they have chosen to take. This application gives these students a convenient and effective method of learning and practicing vocabulary words. I have always encouraged these students to create flashcards but that is a time consuming task and this application offers an easy solution. Students will use this application to learn and practice Spanish vocabulary.

Math Drills Liteis a free application that allows a student to learn basic math skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The student may choose one of these categories or choose a mixture of 10 problems. The school district for which I work now requires all students to begin with Algebra and offers no lower level math course. I have students who do not know the basics of math such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication tables. These students need to be able to work basic math problems to experience success in math and physical science. This application will be easy to access and fun to use. Students are able to practice their math skills without the embarrassment of making a mistake in front of peers.

Miss Spell's Class is a free application that lets students test their spelling skills against the most commonly misspelled words on Dictionary.com. Students must decide whether each of 20 words is spelled correctly or incorrectly. This application features American English, 10,000 words in the game, allows the student to see the correct spelling for each misspelled word, saves high scores with a name, and allows you to play with your friends. In general, my students are below average spellers. Some may say this is not a problem in this day and age of spell check on the computer. However, students will not always be in a position where spell check is available. Students are lacking basic spelling skills and this is a fun and easy way for them to overcome their spelling weaknesses. Students will use this application to recognize their spelling weaknesses and make spelling a strength.

Sporcle Lite is a free educational and trivia application. It is a fun and challenging way to test your knowledge, study for tests, or learn about various topics. The Lite version has 25 quizzes that a student can try. The categories include geography, music, science, sports, and more. My students play computer games that test their reaction time but do little to test their knowledge. In a fun and challenging way, Sporcle will test and increase their knowledge on various topics. Students will use Sporcle to help them become engaged in learning for the sake of learning. They will use the application on their own or may work with a team to answer questions.
